2006 

A. Pathways Board and Organization

  • The Board completed a strategic planning process and adopted a new Organizational Strategy.

  • The Board began a process that will enable local business members to participate in the Washington State Business and Occupation Tax Credit Incentive Program.

  • The very successful “Cheney Cooks” cookbook (over 1,000 copies sold!) will be followed by “City Sweets”, a desserts cookbook that will be available in mid 2007.

  • The third season of the Friday Farmers Market is the most successful so far with a one-third increase in the number of vendors and patrons.

  • Two Board members concluded their service to Pathways to Progress and two new Board members were added to the team.

  • 2006 Board Officers are:  Ruth Galm, President; Nadine Arevalo, Vice President; Steve Bertram, Scribe; and Rhonda Elliott, Treasurer.

B. Pathways Committees/Projects

  • Several new businesses opened in downtown, including The Pita Pit Restaurant, Cheney Delights Restaurant, The Antique Store, and (the quilt shop).

  • Pathways to Progress led a community-wide process to create a Cheney Economic Development Strategy together with a detailed and comprehensive Action Plan.

  • In partnership with the City of Cheney, Pathways hosted the first Cheney Fest in October, coinciding with the Presidents’ Cup football at EWU’s Woodward Stadium.

  • The second annual Winter Festival was an overwhelming success with the community involved in a full spectrum of holiday activities.

  • The Rodeo Days Arts, Crafts and Food Festival enjoyed great success with nearly forty vendors on downtown streets.

  • Flower baskets and planters returned to the heart of downtown, along First Street between D and G Streets; there were more blooms than ever, lasting longer into the fall.

  • The “Shop Cheney First” campaign was launched with posters, flyers, and business coupons.

  • Pathways to Progress purchased additional street tree lights for installation by the City of Cheney throughout the downtown area.

C. Pathways Staff

  • As many as 15 students (work-study and academic interns from EWU) were working for Pathways to Progress and the Cheney-Palouse Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute.

  •  Students complete preparation of the downtown design guidelines project, a comprehensive administrative calendar for the organization and the initial components for the Ice Age Floods tour brochure.

  • Students also worked with Board and Committee members on projects listed above.

D. Service Learning

  • During EWU’s spring quarter, the 1,000th student was engaged in service learning activities through Pathways to Progress.

  • The partnership between Pathways to Progress and the EWU English program to produce the quarterly newsletter blossomed with excellent results.

  • Students continue to find meaningful projects at Pathways to Progress that complement their classroom learning experiences.
